First Surplus of the Obama Presidency
« on: May 08, 2012, 19:14 »
Quote
(AP/The Huffington Post) The Obama administration saw its first monthly budget surplus in April, with the federal government recording $58 billion, according to figures released by the Congressional Budget Office.

MarketWatch reports:

Quote
The surplus -- the first of Barack Obama?s presidency -- was the result of both increased tax collection and lower government spending.

Glad to see something like this. Concrete proof that Obama's policies are bringing forth something positive. News like this will hopefully help Obama in his re-election campaign. As for the each party saying the other is being obstructionist, well, look at what each party is trying to do. The Democrats are trying to push through policies that have always had bipartisan support in the past, while the Republicans are trying to pass bills that only conform to their own ideology. So who's obstructing what now?

You should be very sceptical when reading economic news, it's truly easy to mask a bad economy with a fake surplus. For example your assets are falling by 10 millions you sell an active worth 15 million, you have a surplus of 5 millions, but it's a fake one because it is just alienation of assets, next semester you'll have a red balance sheet again.

Last I read about US economy it was going bad, very bad, that's why I say try to get all the facts. ^^

Our economy is recovering, what people don't realize is that although the crash happens quite quickly it takes about a decade, or two, to pull out of a recession. Things just get a little better every year.

As far a the Congressional Budget goes, Arte may be right. It would take some homework to find out why we are back in the black and whether or not to get excited.

I wouldn't get excited about it. It's good news, but it's not great news. Frankly, seeing anything positive about the economy anymore is a good thing.

@Onion
Are you being sarcastic? :x Either way it's one of the easier ways to fake results for political campaigns.

@hoob
It doesn't take that long to pull out of a recession well maybe in overdeveloped countries like usa or european countries with a services sector way too big. Still it's easy to recover the economy but to win back the rights you (people) need to lose to fix it is another history.

@Geni
It's still better than having another deficit :D

They really need to stop cutting things, at least things that don't need to be cut. Now, if they want to cut subsidies to the oil industry, I'm all on board for that.

Well I would like to support with a popular decision like that but I can't. In the modern world Oil is too important. The money they could cut on oil should go to energy research, so we all can get better cleaner energy sources. Now the thing is, USA as a much wider range of investments... Most of the problems USA faces have to do with the cost of energy and we our current level of technology oil is energy :/

The oil industry in the US is a bloated whale. They make billions of profits on their own, before subsidies. I don't think they need taxpayer money to protect their profits. :XD:

Exactly. Unfortunately, Senate Republicans blocked efforts to end the subsidies, because Big Oil is lining their pockets and helping them launch attack ads against their Democratic opponents. :you seem to be seri
