How Mitt Romney Closed MA Budge Gap

(1/1)

--- Quote ---WASHINGTON -- Mitt Romney's boast that he closed a $3 billion budget gap as Massachusetts governor without raising taxes is a cornerstone of his White House campaign, a way to highlight his pitch for lower taxes and leaner government in a race where federal budget deficits and the slumping economy are hot issues.

What he rarely mentions is how he did it. The presumptive Republican nominee and Democratic state lawmakers raised hundreds of millions of dollars for cash-strapped state coffers by approving new and higher fees on everything from marriage licenses to real estate transactions to gun licenses.

You have to wonder about this one. Yeah, technically, Romney didn't lie. No new taxes, just a crap load of fee hikes. Maybe someone should have got him to include fees in the statement. Saying no new taxes sure sounds good, though, doesn't it? I'll give credit where credit is due, he made a claim, and followed through at the level of magnificent b-----d. But at the same time, what a rip off. A lot of those fees are for documents common people get over their lifetimes. ID cards, marriage licenses, and raising fees from pocket change to over a hundred dollars? It might not be taxes, but it hits just as hard. Frankly, I wouldn't want that in a president. Telling us no new taxes just to hit us with fees feels like such a let down. He leaves you feeling like we're not going to have to pay more to government, then boom, he gets you. That trick may have worked once, Mr. Romney, but we're not going to fall for that one again. Keeps your fees to yourself, and worry more about cutting grants to Big Oil and other groups that have more money than they need that could actually be used to help.
