TS Debby Drops Two Feet of Rain on Florida
« on: June 26, 2012, 19:08 »
Quote
ST. GEORGE ISLAND, Fla. (AP) - Debby flooded homes, an animal shelter and closed parts of the main interstate highway across northern Florida as the storm crept closer to the state, dropping more than two feet of rain in one sparsely populated area.

The tropical storm promised to bring more winds, rain and the possibility of flooding to the already saturated state. It was forecast to make landfall by early Wednesday, cross Florida and head into the Atlantic on Thursday.

It's pretty bad when the first picture in the article depicts people being forced to travel through their neighborhood by boat. It's crazy to see weather disasters like this continuing to take place. I also have to wonder sometimes if more could be put into preparation to prevent such disasters, such as building homes with a higher foundation to keep them elevated in case of flooding? Or maybe permanent infrastructure that could be used to halt advancing flood waters, similar to the emergency bulkheads found on naval ships. At least it's only the rain for this one, rather than a combination of rain and significant wind damage that could come with a much more powerful storm. Florida has seen worse from other hurricane seasons; hopefully this will be the worst they deal with this year.

Oh my. That is pretty bad, but like you said, at least it's only the rain, and not the heavily damaging winds that come with a major hurricane.

Indeed. The last I checked, doesn't look like Debby will become stronger than a tropical storm. It's set to head northeast after crossing over Florida. The only other threat to land it could pose is a possible brush with Bermuda and maybe Canada.

Ah, that's good. As cool as these storms are, it's not good when they cause people problems.

Indeed. It's cool to see the powerful storms form and stuff, and I bet they present their own challenge to hurricane hunters flying through them, but it's best they not cause problems for people.
