I know I'd hate being bald. I hate that I'm balding now. I'm scared to see what I'll look like ten years from now. :TT TT:

I came to grips with the fact that I am balding long ago. But I also grew out what hair I have left...

I've tried growing out my hair, but it just doesn't grow out the way I want it to. It's way too curly; even when I let it grow for a few years, it looked like it was shoulder length. :;^^:

Gen, you should just get a wig for daily use, or something. Then you won't have to worry about it anymore!

Mine is more wavy than curly, but the curls are the reason that I grew my hair out in the first place. When my "bangs" got to the point that they were no longer an issue, I had to do something different.

Growing up, my dad, who had the same hairline as I, as did/does his father, my brother, my uncle, and I presume all male ancestors on that side of the family, (Sorry son!) always just had my mom cut his hair. She would just comb it back and cut it straight across the bottom. Done! Simple, easy to maintain, and looked fine, considering there was nothing on-top or in front. If I did that, my curls/waves would make my hair stand out all over the place! That length, just to the nape of the neck or whatever, is precisely the WRONG spot for my hair to be, unless I totally forgo all vanity. So I had a choice: Cut it short, as in buzz-cut, shave it off, or grow it out. I chose the latter. (Interestingly, one of my co-workers shaved his head about the same time, and my brother usually has a buzz cut...)

So I started growing it out. This was about 6 or 7 years ago, when my daughter was about 4ish and starting to grow her hair out too. Here is one of the best pictures of my hair, with an assist by the Magic House children's science museum in St. Louis:

My mom always told me growing up that if I grew my hair long I would be the envy of all the girls, because it waves in just the way many of them spend lots of time and money to get their hair to do... I don't think they envy the front though...

My biology teacher in high school told me that you get the baldness gene from your Mother's Father. My grandpa has all of his hair, so I should be relatively safe!

That is what they always say, but that doesn't explain why all of the men on my dad's side of the family have the same exact hairline, and my mom's dad didn't have that hairline...

Male pattern baldness runs in the female side of the family. Receding hairlines run in the male side, at least according to my family's experience...

As for the hair... I liked it before, sorry to say... It will grow back, just don't go back to that stylist. (Not that it looks bad now, just too short, especially for what you described as wanting done with it.)

EDIT: Because I was currious about the current state of genetic research on the issue, I looked it up. Here is what it said on Wikipedia, with citations, so I expect it is OK...
"Recent research confirmed the X linked androgen receptor as the most important gene. With a gene on chromosome 20 being the second most important determinant gene (snpedia). This research suggest that heredity AGA is X linked, however, research has also shown that a person with a balding father has a significantly greater chance of experiencing hair loss. Men whose fathers had experienced hair loss were 2.5 times more likely to experience hair loss themselves, regardless of the mother's side of the family, which may suggest Y linked heredity plays a role."

So, research has confirmed that the gene they know the most about is X linked, thus comes from the mother, but it is also true that you are 2.5 times more likely to experience hairloss if your father had hair loss... Sounds like they just haven't found the right gene! I have always been told that baldness comes from your mother's side, but I have always known it was BS! LOL!

Zen, you have the hair I want (minus the front).
Onion... it'll grow back. It looks alright, but the cuts you wanted would've been better. :XD:
As for me, well, my hair pattern is pretty much identical to my father's. The only difference is that my hair is more curly than his was. I'm balding the same way, right down the middle. :TT TT:

Maybe I can get some kind of surgery to get my hair back... wigs would be cheaper, though. That, and I'm worried they'll pull hair off my rear, or something weird like that. :omg:

You look like you're good to go. Gen was showing signs of balding since he started Uni. Maybe the stress from his studies made it fall out? You look cool, even with shorter hair. Can't wait to see what you'll look like when it grows back out and you get it with the style you wanted.
Maybe I can get some kind of surgery to get my hair back... wigs would be cheaper, though. That, and I'm worried they'll pull hair off my rear, or something weird like that. :omg:
If it's practical, do the surgery, otherwise, stick with wigs. You're natural hair just isn't working all that well for you, as far as trying to look feminine goes. (Sorry for being so honest)
