TEL HAZEKA, Golan Heights ? Israeli tanks struck a Syrian artillery launcher Monday after a stray mortar shell flew into Israel-held territory, the first direct clash between the neighbors since the Syrian uprising began nearly two years ago.

The confrontation fueled new fears that the Syrian civil war could drag Israel into the violence, a scenario with grave consequences for the region. The fighting has already spilled into Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey.

This makes me nervous to read about. The last thing I'd want to see is another country get sucked into the Syrian crisis, especially Israel. After not having issues in four decades along their border, though, things are starting to look uncomfortable with the repeated crossings of the border by Syrian forces. We can only hope that Assad is removed from power before he can complete a desperation move against Israel.

I hope this doesn't turn into anything really bad; they have enough problems over there already

DJIBOUTI, Nov 15 (Reuters) - Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu called on Muslim nations to recognise a fledgling Syrian opposition coalition on Thursday and warned Turkey had both the will and capacity to defend its borders if violence continued to spill over.

Speaking at an Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) ministerial meeting in Djibouti, Davutoglu hailed the formation of the new opposition grouping as an "important achievement" and said President Bashar al-Assad's regime was on its last legs.

Now Turkey is stepping up to the plate. One could think this would send a signal to Assad to quit before someone succeeds in killing him or otherwise forcefully removing him from power. There are times for being stubborn, and when people are dying because of it, it's time to drop the tough guy act. Unless Assad knows something that the rest of the world doesn't, he's not going to come out of this still in power, and given how things tend to go in this kind of situation, he'll probably end up dead. It's his choice, though, I'm not a politician, and I'm not about to tell someone how to run their country, nor am I really qualified to tell a person to step down. I don know that history tends to repeat itself in situations such as these, something that Assad would be wise to keep in mind.

I agree; if Assad were smart, he'd quit while he was still alive.
