Title: Man fesses up to a lifetime of 'pranks' in obituary
Post by: Zen on July 17, 2012, 17:04
A Utah man who died at the age of 59 of throat cancer wrote his own obituary and in it, he came clean on a number of pranks, crimes, and misrepresentations (http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow/utah-man-confessional-obituary-owns-life-pranks-180934687.html) he had perpetrated over his cigarette shortened life.

Among the confessions in his final note to the world, the topper has to be this:
Quote
First up, the former engineer admits he never earned the advanced degree from the University of Utah that gained him entrance to his chosen professional career:

"What happened was that the day I went to pay off my college student loan at the U of U, the girl working there put my receipt into the wrong stack, and two weeks later, a PhD diploma came in the mail. I didn't even graduate, I only had about 3 years of college credit. In fact, I never did even learn what the letters 'PhD' even stood for."
WOW! That is just dumb luck, and blatant dishonesty, that probably netted the guy a couple of million dollars extra over the course of his career! The average salary for guys that finished 3 years of college and haven't got a degree compared to Engineering PhD's has to be pretty freakin' large!

Ain't that something? It's amazing what a little error can do, even more amazing that the knowledge deficiencies he had compared to his peers that actually did have a PhD didn't hinder him from having a successful career. At least the man got a chance to live life to the fullest before it ended. Glad to see him mention that people shouldn't smoke.

Wow, I wish I could just accidentally get a PhD. I wouldn't try to put rocks in a geyser, though.

That's not nice! I could earn one if I really wanted it.

It would take hard work, dedication, and about a decade of your life. Still interested?

You know, when you put it that way... no... sounds kinda boring.

Don't feel bad, I don't have the patience for it, either. :XD:

Hey, been there... done that... quit before getting a masters!
:)

I was thinking of going in for a masters after taking a year off from school. Of course, I planned on getting a job in my field for a bit to get a little real world experience under my belt, as well as make me look more appealing to grad schools. I never did get a job in my field, though, and I likely won't for quite some time, if ever. :XD:

I'm sure the two of you could do it, if you wanted to. I mean, I'm just not the smart type, at all. I'm not upset, though; I let Gen handle the intellectual stuff. I just handle her common sense.

Honestly, I have no interest in it anymore. I felt kinda disgusted with it after my last year. Working harder than anyone else, at best, put me on par with the worst of the bunch, while to the others, it all came with such ease. I felt like I was an embarrassment to the school for the most part.. I don't have an interest in putting myself into that again.

Well, Gen... I'll support you if you ever change your mind, okay?

Well, that's good to know, but don't count on it happening anytime soon, if ever. :X3:
